How many MCP servers are there?

No one knows the exact total, but public estimates range into the tens of thousands. MCPVault indexes approximately 5,000 quality-filtered servers from GitHub, grading each from A to F. Other directories report higher raw counts, often including duplicates, forks, and unmaintained experiments. The ecosystem grew quickly after Anthropic released the protocol in November 2024 and OpenAI adopted it in March 2025. New servers appear daily, and because anyone can publish a repository that implements the protocol, the true count changes by the hour.
